SDWG INARI 2017 2

The first Arctic Council Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG) meeting under Finnish Chairmanship was held in Inari on September 21-22. The meeting reviewed SDWG Work Plan for 2017-2019, project proposals, and status reports on ongoing projects.

The 4th Arctic Energy Summit took place in Helsinki on September 18-20. The Summit is an endorsed project of the Arctic Council Sustainable Development Working Group. This year the Summit was organized by Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and Institute of the North that is a NF business partner. Within 3 days Summit discussed renewable energy, oil and gas, community impact, energy policy and regulation, financing and investments.

On July 20th, 2017 in Yakutsk, the Executive Director of the Northern Forum, Mikhail Pogodaev, met with the US Consul General in Vladivostok Michael Keays who visited the city at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Russian-American Pacific Partnership.

From June 29 to July 2, 2017 a meeting of the Northern Forum Regional Coordinators Committee was held in Khanty-Mansiysk. The meeting brought together coordinators and representatives of the Northern Forum member regions, potential member regions, experts, the Northern Forum project participants, chairs and members of working groups of the organization. Representatives of such regions as Krasnoyarsk Krai, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Akureyri, Lapland, Alaska, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Kamchatka Krai, Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Primorsky Krai and Arkhangelsk Oblast attended the event.

At the International Oblas (hollowed log boat) Rowing Competitions that ended the day before, athletes fought hard for the highest places on the podium. However, for some participants, the Governor's Cup was the only opportunity to try themselves in oblas rowing. One of these people was the director of Arctic portal, the representative of Iceland, Halldór Jóhannsson, who shared his impressions of the event and Ugra in general with the press service of UgraMegaSport.

The panel discussion on US-Russia cooperation in the Arctic was held on May 14, 2017, within the North by North program. Executive Director of the Northern Forum Mikhail Pogodaev was invited to participate in the panel discussion along with Alaskan Governor’s Arctic Policy Advisor Craig Fleener. The major issues discussed were the barriers and new opportunities for strengthening the cooperation of US and Russia in the Arctic. Discussion mostly focused on the history of interaction within the Northern Forum, as well as the new opportunities to strengthen the cooperation in light of Alaska’s return to the Northern Forum.

Film Festival took place in Anchorage Museum on May 14 within the North by North events in Anchorage, where the Northern Forum business partner, Director of Clean Water LLC (Sakha Republic (Yakutia)) Egor Makarov presented his film with great success. The following movies were featured at the festival: “24 snows” by Egor Makarov, “Sien Eker” by Sergey Ermolaev, and “When Gods come closer” by Eduard Novikov.

On May 13, Head Chefs from across the Arctic gathered together to make their favourite dishes from Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia at the festival of Northern peoples’ food culture. Each chef had the opportunity to cook an Alaskan wild salmon in their own way and one dish using the Northern ingredients. Head Chef of Muus Khaia restaurant Nikolay Gabyshev took part in the festival on behalf of the Northern Forum.
