On May 11, 2017, Ministers of Foreign Affairs from the eight Arctic states and leaders of the six Arctic Council Permanent Participants, indigenous peoples’ organizations gathered together at the 10th Ministerial session of the Arctic Council to mark the conclusion of the US Chairmanship and to herald the beginning of the Finnish Chairmanship, which will run from 2017 to 2019.

The Northern Forum is an observer to the Arctic Council, and on May 11, 2017, SAO Chair David Bolton traditionally invited all observers to breakfast to discuss observers’ engagement in the Arctic Council activities.

The Northern Forum is one of the members of the Arctic Council international project “EALLU: indigenous youth, adaptation to climate change and food culture”. As part of the US Arctic Council Chairmanship conclusion, EALLU final report was presented in a form of a culinary book of the Arctic indigenous peoples, in creation of which representatives of the main Arctic indigenous peoples’ organizations were involved – Permanent Participants of the Arctic Council.

On May 9, 2017, Executive Director of the Northern Forum Mikhail Pogodaev and Director of the Institute of the North Nils Andreassen participated in the International Arctic Assembly, which was held at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Arctic today and the futureThe Northern Forum has attended the VI International Forum “Arctic: Today and the Future” in Saint Petersburg on December 5-7, 2016.

Lapland into NF2Lapland officially rejoined the Northern Forum at a signing ceremony held in Reykjavik at the Arctic Circle Assembly. The annual Arctic Circle Assembly is the largest annual international gathering on the Arctic that brings together officials, entrepreneurs, experts and indigenous representatives interested in Arctic issues. The assembly is under the patronage of the former President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.

Lapland into NFOn October 8, the Governor of Lapland Mika Riipi will sign the Northern Forum membership agreement with the Executive Director Mikhail Pogodaev – during “From Alaska to Lapland – Local voices strengthening Arctic Council Chairmanships” breakout session within the framework of the international Assembly “Arctic Circle”.

SAO in PortlandThe Northern Forum attends the Arctic Council’s Senior Arctic Officials (SAOs) and indigenous Permanent Participant organizations (PPs) meeting in Portland, Maine, on 5-6 of October 2016 to discuss the Council’s ongoing work and future plans to address environmental issues and promote sustainable development in the Arctic.
