The Russian President Vladimir Putin signed on May 13 the decree on the expansion of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation at the expense of eight regions of Yakutia. Earlier territories of five coastal areas of Yakutia were a part of the Arctic zone.

I took a short-term intensive course as a graduate student at the invitation of the Norwegian side from April 1 to April 5, 2019 in Buda, Norway. The purpose of this course was to study and analyze interdisciplinary and theoretical research management approaches in the context of the High North. During the educational event participants also had the opportunity to review existing classifications of types and levels of management, including public, global and corporate governance.

This week Arkadii Diodorov started in the position of Acting Executive Director of the Northern Forum Secretariat. Olga Timofeeva-Tereshkina, who led the Secretariat previously, was appointed to serve as a Head of Secretariat of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia).

At the 11th Arctic Council Ministerial meeting in Rovaniemi, Finland, Ministers of the eight Arctic States, leaders from the six indigenous Permanent Participant organizations and the Chairs of the six Working Groups of the Arctic Council met to mark the passing of the Chairmanship from Finland to Iceland.

Sustainable development is a major challenge of our age. In 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, the concept of global development named “sustainable development”, derived from the Brundtland Report, was officially acknowledged; it can be classified as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations”. In 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals and which implementation should involve not only governments but also transnational companies, charity foundations, community, NGOs and academia worldwide. Essentially, sustainable development implies equilibrium between the economic, environmental and social fields of human activity.
