TROMSØ (Norway), Jan 22 “The Arctic is a region of stability and international cooperation, and it is necessary to make every possible efforts to keep this state, to solve climate change issues by joint efforts, to seek a balance between industrial interests and environmental protection”, said Ine Eriksen Seøreide, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway on the opening of Arctic Frontiers 2018 conference, held in Tromsø, Norway.

 International Online Olympiad “School of Living in the North” is being held with support of Ministry of Education of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Institute of Education Development and Qualification Improvement of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) as a part of Northern Forum’s events.

AIMS: to develop interactive methods and information technologies in studying languages, to raise students’ interest to creative and researchable activities, focused on northern life values, international cooperation and successful socialization in the modern world.

OBJECTS:

  1. Encouraging the study and development of the culture, formed through life under harsh Arctic conditions.
  2. Promoting research activities among students.
  3. Develop students’ foreign communicative competence.
  4. Find and support talented, creative children and youth.

Last Friday President Vladimir Putin launched the first loading of liquefied natural gas at $27 billion Yamal LNG project. This project will allow Russia to fulfill a plan to double its share of the global LNG market by 2020 from around 4% now.

All-Russia scientific conference "Regional Problems of Russian Far East Development" devoted to 80th anniversary of Robert Moiseev, a famous scientist of Kamchatka, will take place in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on December 6-7.

VII International Forum "Arctic: Today and the Future" started in Saint Petersburg on December 4. This year the Forum brought together over 1600 participants. Key issues on this year's agenda are a development of reference zones and monocities, industrial cooperation and modern communication systems, environmental preservation and development of ecotourism in the Arctic. The meeting of the State Commission for Arctic Development chaired by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitriy Rogozin will traditionally take place in the margins of the Forum.

The protocol of intentions between the Northern Forum and Torum Maa open-air ethnographic museum, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Ugra, was signed on the margins of the international research conference “Siberian Ugric People in a Necklace of Subarctic Cultures: Common and Unique” held in Khanty-Mansiysk on October 30-31.

The 80th Anniversary of the first President of Sakha Republic (Yakutia) Mikhail Yefimovich Nikolaev was held in November 13, 2017. Period of his Presidency 1991 to 2002 were the hardest times of the Soviet Union’s collapse, democratic reforms, introduction of free trade relations, contrasted with social, economic and political instability and tensions.

NOVEMBER 1-4, SALEKHARD, the II International Workshop of the Siberian Environmental Change Network (SecNet) "Siberia in a Global Context. Winter Weather and Climate Extremes: Prediction and Adaptation" will bring together leading researchers and indigenous representatives to discuss the outcomes of interdisciplinary research and to exchange information on extreme weather events and their impact on nature and society to develop adaptation strategies.

Arctic Council’s Senior Arctic Officials meeting held in Oulu, Finland, on 25-26 October 2017, was attended by representatives of the eight Arctic states and six indigenous Permanent Participant organizations, as well as the Arctic Council’s six Working Groups and more than thirty Observers. The Northern Forum was represented by the Governor of Lapland Mika Riipi and NF Executive Director, Mikhail Pogodaev.
