During opening ceremony of International Oblas Rowing Competitions for the Ugra Governor`s Cup held in Nefteyugansky district, Governor of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug Natalya Komarova received a medal named after Walter Hickel - a founder of the Northern Forum.
The decision to award a medal for contributing to Northern Forum and northern cooperation development was made at the XIII General Assembly of the Northern Forum in Krasnoyarsk this April.
Northern Forum's Walter Hickel Medal was initiated by Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in 2013 with the aim of appreciating and thanking the most distinguished people of the North for their contribution to regional development and Northern Forum. The former Governor of Alaska Walter Hickel, who was the first NF Chair and then Secretary General, contributed greatly to formation and development of the Northern Forum.
