Walter Hickel Medal

Established by the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) under Resolution № 169, the Walter Hickel Medal honors individuals who have made significant contributions to Northern regional development and the Northern Forum.

The award is named after Walter Hickel, the former Governor of Alaska and U.S. Secretary of the Interior, who served as the Northern Forum’s first Chair (1992–1994).

Robert Moiseev Medal

Established by the Northern Forum under Resolution № 261, the Robert Moiseev Medal recognizes outstanding achievements in science and education within the North and the Russian Far East.

The medal honors Robert Savelievich Moiseev (1937–2007), a renowned expert in regional economics, demography, and ecology.

Walter Hickel

Robert Moiseev Medal "For Contribution to the Development of Science in the Far East" was established by the Northern Forum international organization in accordance with Resolution No. 261. This award honors the memory of the distinguished scientist and Honorary Citizen of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Robert Savelievich Moiseev (1937–2007), and serves to recognize excellence in scientific research and education in the North.

Robert Moiseev was a prominent expert in regional economics, demography, and the ecology of the Far North. His scientific work on economic management and sustainable environmental studies became a cornerstone for the development of many northern territories. He made a significant contribution to strengthening scientific cooperation within the Northern Forum, striving to integrate expert knowledge into regional governance. The tradition of awarding this medal every two years at the "Moiseev Readings" All-Russian Conference highlights the lasting impact of his legacy on the Russian Far East and the Arctic.

1 Walter Hickel

The Northern Forum's Walter Hickel Medal was established in accordance with the Resolution № 169 upon the initiative of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) with the purpose of encouraging and appreciating the most distinguished people of the North for their contribution to the development of the regions and the Northern Forum.

 

Walter Hickel was twice the Governor of Alaska (1966-1969, 1990, 1994), Secretary of the Interior in Richard Nixon's Administration, and the First Chair of the Northern Forum (1992-1994). He made an outstanding contribution to the establishment and development of the Northern Forum. The Northern Forum became the first organization of regions which gave an incentive to the establishment of a number of large international organizations and the beginning of real cooperation in order to achieve sustainable development of the Arctic and the North.
