The ninth day of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the Arctic Pavilion was devoted to issues such as transport and ice forecasting in the Arctic.

Current global climate trends are transforming the Northern Sea Route (NSR) into a year-round global transport and logistic corridor. Expected expansion of traffic including various dangerous goods may cause potential environmental impact on the Arctic marine and coastal environment putting additional pressures on fragile Arctic ecosystem amplifying climate change impacts. The Lomonosov Moscow State University Marine Research Center and Arctic Portal (Iceland) held a session on the environmental safety of the Northern Sea Route. Alexander Shestakov, one of the most well known Arctic experts and Goodwill Ambassador of the Northern Forum, moderated the session. Paul Fuhs, Marine Exchange of Alaska (USA), Bijoy Nandan, School of Marine Sciences (India), Halldor Johannsson, Arctic Portal (Iceland), Alexey Skorina, MRC MSU, Elena Gershelis, Sirius University (Russia) shared their vision.

African youth held a panel discussion with the Global Solar Energy Council on «Climate Resilience and Energy Solutions: Bridging Arctic and African Perspectives». The experience of implementing alternative energy sources in the Arctic can be used successfully in African countries. The level of implementation of solar, wind and thermal energy in the Arctic is extremely high. And this sphere can become or is already becoming an area of mutually beneficial co-operation between the Arctic and African countries.

On November 11-22, the Northern Forum is hosting the first-of-its-kind Arctic Pavilion at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
