NORTHERN BUILDING AND TECHNOLOGIES
Building houses and infrastructures in the North differs from what is done in milder climates, because of several factors:
- low temperatures in the winter
- in some cases, large differences of temperatures (amplitudes reaching 100 degrees) between summer and winter
- lack of sunshine in the winter, abundance of sunshine in the summer
- snowfall and ice creating obstacles
- permafrost, which requires piling and isolation from the ground
- melting permafrost, for which new technologies have to be devised
- added costs because materials are flown in due to the lack of roads
and numerous other factors.
The Northern Forum brings together architects, builders, environmentalists, indigenous peoples and other interested parties, some of whom are also Business Partners, to exchange information and technologies and find the best solutions for the North.
