The Northern Forum

Chronology

The Northern Forum was formally established in November 1991, but its history reaches into the mid-1970s. Following is a brief outline of the Forum's milestones and major accomplishments.

1991
August - December Dissolution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic, and subsequent entry of Russia's northern territories into the on-going regional debate about sub-national governmental cooperation.
8 November The Northern Forum is formally established with fourteen members from nine countries.
1992
July The Northern Forum Secretariat is established in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.
September The 1st Northern Forum Board of Directors Meeting is held in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada.
1993
September The 2nd Board of Directors Meeting and the 1st Northern Forum General Assembly is held in Tromsø, Troms, Norway. The Tromsø Declaration is adopted.
December To facilitate the involvement of Russian member regions in Northern Forum activities, an Associate Secretariat is established in Yakutsk, Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Russia.
1994
January The Northern Forum is accredited by the United Nations as a non-governmental organization.
September The 3rd Board of Directors Meeting is held in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland. The Rovaniemi Code of Conduct, addressing northern business practices, is adopted. The Northern Forum Academy is founded to provide scientific and academic support for Northern Forum projects.

August A "Northern Lights International Film Festival" is held in Anchorage, Alaska, USA, with assistance from the Northern Forum. Films from nine northern countries are shown
September The 4th Board of Directors Meeting concurrent with the 2nd Northern Forum General Assembly is held in conjunction with the Northern Festival 1995 in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. The Hokkaido Declaration is adopted. The reports from the project "Environmental Research and Monitoring of the Atmosphere and Oceans Project," titled, Environmental Status Report on Northern Regions, Volume I & II, are completed. The Northern Forum Symposia: Toward the New Development of Northern Regions is conducted and its results published.
1996
June The annual Regional Coordinator's Meeting is held in Yakutsk, Sakha Republic, Russia.
September The 5th Northern Forum Board of Directors Meeting is held in the city of Khanty-Mansiysk within the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, Russia.
1997
May The annual Regional Coordinator's Meeting is held in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.
August The 5th Board of Directors Meeting meets concurrent with the 3rd Northern Forum General Assembly in Yakutsk, Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Russia. The Yakutsk Declaration is adopted.
1998
June The annual Regional Coordinator's Meeting is held in Bodø, Nordland County, Norway.
September The 7th Northern Forum Board of Directors meeting is held in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.
December The North European Associate Secretariat opens in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland.

March The annual Northern Forum Regional Coordinators meeting is held in Banff, Alberta, Canada.
May-June The 4th Northern Forum General Assembly is held in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland.
2000
February The annual Northern Forum Regional Coordinators Meeting is held in Skellefteå, Västerbotten and Luleå, Norrbotten, Sweden.
September Early in the month, the Steering Committee meets in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada).
2001
March The Regional Coordinators hold their meeting in Helsinki, Finland. The Executive Committee convenes in Moscow.
October The 5th General Assembly, initially scheduled for the third week of September, is postponed because of the disruption caused by the attack on the United States. It is held end of October together with the 10th Anniversary celebration of the Forum in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada).

2002

May

The Executive Committee meets in Oulu, Oulu Province (Finland)

The Regional Coordinators meet in Harbin, Heilongjiang (China) during the Harbin Trade Fair. 

2003  

  April

 

The 6th General Assembly is held in St. Petersburg, Russia to

coincide with the celebration of the City's 300th anniversary.

October The Executive Committee convenes in Iceland for their own meeting and also attend the Arctic Council Ministerial meeting.

2004 

June The city of Khanty-Mansiisk in the Khanty-Mansiisk Autonomous Okrug in Western Siberia (Russia) hosts the Regional Coordinators' meeting at the same time as it holds its annual Ecological Action.
July Meeting of the Executive Committee in Yakutsk, Sakha Republic (Russia) together with a Governors' Summit focusing on climate issues.

2005 

June The 7th General Assembly is held in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China, at the time of the Harbin International Trade Fair to enable regional delegates to visit the Fair.

2006  

 September Regional Coordinators Committee meeting - Girdwood, Alaska

2007       

April  Regional Coordinators Committee meeting - Moscow, Russia. The meeting was held at the Morozovka Hotel near Moscow to facilitate travel for most regions.
 September The 8th General Assembly is held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, together with a Business Summit and a Northern Cultural Festival 

 2008

 April 

 Regional Coordinators Committee meeting - Akureyri, Iceland
