NORTHERN TOURISM

Tourism is a fast developing segment of all Northern economies. People are attracted to the remoteness and the beauty of the North, the opportunity to see pristine wildlife, indigenous lifestyles and Northern cultures. Extreme tourism is also growing, as visitors want to experience extremely low temperatures or sports in unusual surroundings.

The regions of the Northern Forum are fascinating regions to visit, and are making great efforts to improve their tourism and transport infrastructures to attract visitors. In recent years, some of them have seen a 50% increase in tourism, which has become a strong share of their economy. As revenue from other sources might actually be in decline, Northerners are intent on developing this sector of activity becasue it has the potential to open up their regions to other economic developments by creating a welcoming infrastructure.

Sustainable Model for Arctic Regional Tourism (SMART)

Recognizing the significant growth in the number of visitors to the Arctic and the increasing importance of tourism to the economies of rural communities in the Arctic, the Northern Forum, working with the Sustainable Development Working Group of the Arctic Council, supports responsible tourism in the Arctic and the North.

The Northern Forum partnered with the Arctic Council's Sustainable Development Working Group in the SMART project (Sustainable Model of Arctic Regional Tourism) from 2003 to 2005. The goal was to study positive models of ecotourism, develop a label for tourism companies in the North with a proven ecological record,  and offer training to further develop the environmentally-friendly orientation.

The SMART project concluded at the end of 2005 and a report was submitted to the Arctic Council.
