Background
Villages in the North and the Arctic are often isolated and do not necessarily benefit from nearby industrial developments. Unemployment often runs high and opportunities are very limited. For many years, the Northern Forum regions have been trying to find solutions to keep people on the land, to maintain their traditional way of life, and at the same time to receive training and hold jobs, in particular long-term sustainable jobs. It is a challenge for northern villages, and even more in the Arctic, where in spite of intense resource development, very few residents benefit from employment opportunities.
However, with climate change and new economic challenges, the regions are opening up to such ideas as new technologies, alternate sources of energy, adapted transportation, scientific research and development of industries that revolve around the preservation of their environment and whenever possible, its enhancement.
There is great potential in the North, both from its natural resources and from its people, and the regions are interested in finding out how to make the best use of both in order to foster economic growth in the future.
