CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is at the forefront of concerns in the North and the Arctic, where its effects are more noticeable than in other parts of the planet and can impact very drastically the local populations. See the latest Arctic report card by NOAA: http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/reportcard/index.html.

The Province of Quebec will organize a Permafrost Degradation workshop in Quebec City, April 19 and 20, 2012, just after the Regional Coordinators' meeting to enable the regions to exchange experiences and know-how.

The Northern Forum also cooperates with international organizations to give the regions a voice in mitigating the impact of climate change in the regions.

For more information on climate change, go to the Northern Forum Portal on Climate Change.

The Northern Forum also brings the regions together to discuss solutions to climate change, and practical ways to adapt to problems such as permafrost melting, coastal erosion, warmer temperatures, more intense and frequent flooding and wildfires and other factors. A workshop of the Flood Working Group planned for March 27 and 28, 2012 in St. John's, Newfoundland, will focus on satellite monitoring of these problems, which has become easier with radar technology able to give imagery even in cloudy weather or at night.
