18th Uarctic Council Forum took place in Ulan-Ude (Buryatia) on June 14-18, 2015. The venue – Buryat State University has also hosted an Arctic dialogue in the Global Dimension Conference at the same time.

This event attracted near to 100 universities from the Arctic states, members of local and federal governments, Russian geographical society and leading scientific organizations of Russia and other states – making a number of guests to this event reach 70 people from 15 states. Rich agenda of the forum has included scientific meetings of the Council, sections and excursions around Buryatia.

The Northern Forum Acting Executive Director, World Reindeer Herders Chair and EALAT Institute Mikhail Pogodaev has joined opening ceremony with opening speech. He has outlined the necessity for development of international cooperation in education and science for the good of peoples of the North and the Arctic. With it, a specific attention must be paid to development of education facilities of the Far North.

With support from WRH and EALAT, a Sakha Republic Nizhnekolymsky College of peoples of the North has applied to the Uarctic network. Director Elena Antipina has presented the college. Upon discussion, the Uarctic Council has approved the application and has introduced the College as a member of Uarctic network.

Mr. Pogodaev has invited all participants of the event to the 12th General Assembly of the Northern Forum in Yakutsk on November 4-6, 2015 and offered to hold a special section on interregional cooperation in the North on education and science.

The Northern Forum and Uarctic have an agreement on cooperation, therefore strengthening of ties between these organizations is very important of the North and the Arctic.

During the Arctic Dialogue in the Global Dimension conference on June 18, the Buryat association of indigenous peoples of the North and EALAT Institute have held a special session on preservation and development of taiga reindeer husbandry with participation of reindeer herders of Buryatia, Irkutsk Oblast, Tyva Republic, Mongolia and on the base of Buryat State University.
